‘What is the use of fire if it does not warm?’

Bastard Sun brings together previously unpublished (very) short stories, written over the course of several years,
with the series of 35mm photographs I took in Georgia between 1996 and 2001, before emigrating to the UK.
Speaking from the margins, at first as a teenager of the first post-Soviet generation, then as a young mother and
asylum seeker, I have written these stories predominantly for myself, in order to remember.
Writing in English, which I had to grapple with in the beginning, adds another layer of distortion to the reality
that at times seemed more fickle and fake than fiction - a constant thread running through the book.
