Images Were Burning

6.30 min, HD, SD, sound, 2024

A reflection on Images of violence, the film strings together excerpts from Medoidze’s writing and archive footage
filmed in the vicinity of Hotel Tbilisi, during the violent Coup in Georgia in 1992.
Revamped as a five-star hotel, the bullet marks are still visible if one looks closely.

Hail Medea

7.30 min, 4k, sound, 2023

Inspired by the artist’s visit to historical cave pharmacy in Southern Georgia, and Roland Barthes’ idea of
language as pharmacopoeia (‘poison on one side, antidote on the other’), the film conjures the figure of
Medea through touch, and upturns popular representations of the goddess.

Jackals and Drones, Chronicles of a summer

16 min HD, sound, 2016 - 2018

A Belgian actress arrives in Tbilisi airport to travel to the medieval cave monastery of Vardzia.
Her car journey with two non-professional actors drives the narrative forward, while Medoidze’s camera
records their encounters with jackals, drones and the Orthodox monks, amongst others.
Parallel to the journey, a mythopoetic personage resembling Medea roams the caves,
scorning our obsession with progress and technology.

Black sea is really Black

‘Whilst the beauty of the Georgian landscape is overwhelming, Medoidze’s taste for the absurd
and the self-reflexivity of her address, draw us in and pull us out at the same time.’

Andropov’s Ears

7 min HD, sound, 2015

A modernist monument in Tbilisi nicknamed Andropov’s Ears has recently been demolished,
to be replaced by the symbol of capitalist prosperity: a shopping mall. Medoidze, who is based in London,
opts out of this double negativity by filming the remnants of Brutalist architecture in London and
her sculpture of the missing monument.

Selected screenings:

Foreman Gallery, Sherbrooke, Canada
Le Cyclop, Paris, France

Questions and Answers

3.3 min HD, sound, 2012

‘This is perhaps most pronounced in ‘Questions and Answers‘, where disparate images and scenes are
rapidly spliced together in an associative logic that disorientates the viewer.
Punctuated only by drumrolls and a cryptic voiceover, the film cuts between figures dancing in the street,
to a man collapsing into the ocean, to a hawk hunting a pigeon in central London.’

Dear friend,
Forgive me for not writing all this time, of course I have not forgotten about you.
The thing is that I have changed a lot since I moved here and if it is true, I have no longer any acquaintances
and do not have to write to anyone, as I am a complete stranger to them.
